C'est la Chine · Thailand | Director: Teochew Opera to be passed on from generation to generation
Teochew Opera is a local opera sung in the Teochew dialect and was popularized in Chaoshan, Guangdong Province and Minnan region after its formation in the Ming Dynasty. In Thailand, there is a group of people who are working hard to promote the Chinese local opera, and this episode comes to a local Chinese Opera Society, which is known as the most complete and comprehensive place for Teochew Opera enthusiasts in the Chinese community in Thailand to carry on the tradition.
Speaking about the Society, Chen, an opera director who has been in Thailand for more than 30 years, said that the Society is not a performance group, not commercial, but a gathering of people who love Teochew Opera.
"Many of these troupes don't speak Chinese, but they sing Teochew Opera in Teochew with Thai phonetic transcription, which is a very valuable spirit," he noted.
Although young people do not have any impression of Teochew Opera now, after a certain period, "with our perseverance, Teochew Opera will be passed on."
