Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) chairman David Lok on Monday (Dec. 11) apologized for a system failure that affected voting in Hong Kong's 2023 District Council Ordinary Election on Sunday.

Despite the problem, Lok said more than 1.19 million voters cast their ballots in the directly-elected geographical constituency seats – representing 27.5 percent of the electorate.

'Highly concerned' about the incident, Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee said earlier that he has requested to set up a task force to probe into the cause the system failure, with findings expected in three months.

The glitch led to authorities extending voting hours by one and a half hours, and polling stations switching to printed copies of the voter register to issue ballot papers.

The SAR leader added that the elections had been successful despite so, and that people's participation, the level of organization and the quality of elected district councilors should not be ignored because of a system failure.
