Opinion | After APEC, in the cleaning and greening of America, Xi should rally global leaders behind Biden
By Augustus K. Yeung
Given Fareed Zakaria's book, "The Post-American World" published in 2008, the world's perception of America on decline has since been gathering momentum. Markedly, since the ascendance of Donald J. Trump to the presidency, the U.S. has begun to show clear signs of degradation.
And now after the APEC summit, it is obvious that only President Joe Biden and his cooperation with China can help to stop this down-trend.
Portraying China as a threat, Trump whipped up a huge wave of anti-China sentiments, branding the world's second largest economy – once a war time ally – as the causes that lead to the decline of the U.S.
China was demonized, a conspiracy that Trump and his cult has set up as a scapegoat – which is in fact a propaganda campaign in disguise. Since then, the Chinese students and academics in the U.S. have been living on edges, feeling being labelled as "spies" for stealing high tech knowledge from America.
This ill wind continues to blow even when Joe Biden became president. Biden has had to play along with Trump's legacy of lunacy and heresy, resulting in one negative episodes after another, consisting of negative narratives, pushing bilateral relations to the edge of a cliff.
Domestically, Donald Trump, the ultimate demon, has gone crazy trying to destroy Biden personally and completely, discrediting the U.S. president – with the aim of overthrowing his government, and son Hunter. Has Trump, the MEGA-leader, gone too far?
Is it high time to dump Donald to the dustbin of history?!
Specter of Trump: A Brief History of the Political Rhetoric and Theatric that Happened Since Biden's Presidency
As world leader, America whipped up a whirlwind of anti-China sentiments, starting from Europe to Asia – with Donald Trump, a dubious character.
First, came the trade war, and then the name-calling, portraying COVID-19 as the "Wuhan Virus". And cooking up the theory that the virus was leaked from a lab in Wuhan and insisting on having China to pay for the damages – both human cost and loss of lives – and then the Americans twisted the arms of the Lithuanians and coerced them to be America's pawn, breaking bilateral relationship.
Lithuania, a small Eastern European state, began by annoyingly changing the name of its de facto trade organization in Taiwan, antagonizing Beijing. The result was the next sign of anti-China – as orchestrated by Biden.
Then came Nancy Pelosi, the House Majority Leader – who made a whirlwind visit to Taipei, receiving a medal from the Taiwan leader Tsai Eng-wen – and returning without staying overnight. The PLA reacted unprecedentedly to this glaring provocation with the strongest military response ever, thunderously waking up the Washingtonians – only about to understand Beijing's anger and agony.
The so-called "spy" balloon saga was the latest and the last of the narratives orchestrated by the Americans in Washington where playing China has become fun, or the menu of the day. Had the balloon been really meant not for meteoric purposes, the U.S. military would have hit the ceiling, shooting it down in the first instance.
But it took days and two ally governments, namely Canada and the United States to bring down the civilian balloons that were blown off course. The China's face turned red with anger, while the politicians in Washington and Ottawa were having big laughs.
The jokes –as orchestrated by Washington – had gone too far, and the Chinese were determined not to be played for fun anymore; they shut down the communication channels. Only then do the Americans come to realize the loss of not having China as a valuable partner in the global village – for trade or whatever.
At the APEC, it was said that President Xi had prepared three versions of his speech for his meeting with American business leaders, depending on the social atmosphere. If the Chinese president must be so cautious, the bilateral relations was that bad!
Note: But President Biden still does not understand that the U.S, military – under Lloyd Austin tops the bullying-list that has been antagonizing China aggressively. During summit, Biden asked Xi to resume the military contact; Xi replied that the U.S. president can always pick up the phone, and President Xi will personally answer it. (A resounding diplomatic "NO".
Biden's demonstration of leadership at the APEC summit in San Francisco with President Xi Jinping marks a pivotal turning point – both for the president and his nation's relations with China, which has long since made it a state policy of pro-America, hoping to rationally and sinscerely guide America, riding it out of the hegemonic inclinations, and making it a nation that leads and stabilizes the world – with China, under the umbrella of the UN.
Figuratively speaking, with Xi Jinping by his side, and given the return of the fair-minded former UK Prime Minister David Cameron – as the Foreign Secretary, the present lop-sided world politics can be fine-tuned for another "golden age".
With China's growing influences and ever-expanding circle of friends in the Middle East, Europe, and beyond, the present conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine can hopefully be ended.
Conclusively, the Biden-Xi San Franciso APEC summit has captured the world's attention.
With two of the world's most powerful leaders and their friends and followers, the global village may very well be seeing the worst of times turning into the best of times.
In cleaning and greening the United States of America, President Xi of China can and should now rally the world behind President Biden, who has proved that he is rational, wise and humorous– capable of stabilizing regional political stability and sharing of President Xi Jinping's dream of common prosperity.
Given tens of thousands of American Jews came out to protest Israel's bombing Gaza's civilians, half of them children, America's higher education is helping to clean and green a nation in distress.
And, with China's vital partnership, "The Post American World" phenomenon can hopefully be averted.
