The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Lam Sai-hung, said on a radio programme today (November 1) that the government was reviewing whether there was room for improvement in the procedures for suspending open section services of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) after the issuance of No. 9 signal or above by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO).
Lam continued to say that apart from wind speed, the risk of falling objects should also be considered. However, he considered that the proposal of sealing the open sections of the MTR was undesirable because the foundations of the relevant sections might not be able to withstand the weight of the newly constructed superstructure.
As for the large number of travellers stranded at the airport in inclement weather, Lam stressed that travellers are discouraged from leaving the airport in extreme weather and the government will step up publicity on relevant safety messages. He is also asking the Airport Authority to look into the possibility of using registration or ticket obtaining as a means of relieving travellers of the need to wait for taxis at the taxi stand.
