Patriotic education proposed in the Policy Address is to enable students to learn about their country, Hong Kong's constitutional order under the Constitution and the Basic Law, and the implementation of "one country, two systems", Chief Executive John Lee said in a radio program today (Oct. 28).
Lee said that apart from learning about the history, culture and development of the country, patriotic education should also cultivate conscious patriotism.
He cited the example of going to a museum to learn about the suffering of the nation during the Nanjing Massacre and the destruction of the Yuanmingyuan in Beijing, to cultivate a sense of patriotism through the experience, saying, "Don't ask what the country can do for you, but ask what you can contribute to the country".
Lee also noted that he believed that there was something wrong with education in Hong Kong and that patriotism, which should have been taken for granted, was not.
"Hong Kong's experience of chaos and victimization proves that the city cannot be protected without national security, and it is believed that the community has already strengthened its awareness of national security after the incident in 2019," he added.
