The Sun Museum collaborates with the Hong Kong Artists Society to present its latest exhibition "Peaceful Colour" from Oct. 20 to Dec. 16, 2023. The exhibition features 140 paintings by 70 members of the Society, depicting the intriguing and distinctive characteristics of living in Hong Kong. These works cover various art mediums such as oil, ink, watercolor, gouache, pen and pencil.
The exhibition title "Peaceful Colour" was suggested by Mr. Yeung Chun-tong, the Director of Sun Museum. He encouraged participating artists to freely express themselves, without imposing any restrictions on painting style or artistic medium. The only requirement was that their paintings complied with the required size of A3.
Tai Ping Shan (Victoria Peak) is a renowned landmark in Hong Kong. On the mountaintop, luxurious mansions overlook the housing areas at the foothills where ordinary people reside. Tai Ping Shan symbolizes Hong Kong people's aspirations for a peaceful life, their commitment to self-improvement and their desire to build a better life for themselves and their families. The 70 participating artists depict their own lives in Hong Kong based on their experiences and understanding of the theme, with their preferred artistic mediums.
The exhibition comprises mainly landscape paintings, along with portraits and still-life paintings. Subject matters include the serene and tranquil lifestyle of the fishing village Tai O; Ngong Ping cable car; Yau Ma Tei fruit market in the early morning; the neon lights of Hong Kong; and the bustling life of the city.
Hong Kong is renowned as a paradise for food lovers. The paintings also capture Hong Kong lifestyle through popular local delicacies such as pineapple buns, milk tea, egg waffles, and rice pudding, reflecting Hong Kong people's wishes for a peaceful and abundant life.
Mr. Yeung Chun Tong, Director of the Sun Museum, said, "Although Hong Kong is a commercial city, it is also home to numerous artists, whether amateur or professional, who pursue art and enrich their own lives as well as the lives of others. This exhibition brings together 70 artists to create new works on the same theme, documenting the sentiments of Hong Kong in a particular era. It is truly worth appreciating."
