Diocesan Boys' College student Matthew, 17, who has been missing for a week, was found yesterday (Oct. 11) in the jungle in Wong Tai Sin. Chow Cheuk-fung, Station Commander of Sha Tin Fire Station, said today (Oct. 12) that the rescue priority is to consider the mental and physical condition of the subject, so they did not ask why he appeared in the incident site, while the case will be handed over to the police or relevant departments to follow up.
The search and rescue personnel took more than 10,000 photos by drone in the afternoon of Oct. 10 and sent them to the logistic support department of the headquarters, where they were analyzed by the artificial intelligence image recognition system to create a seasonal map to assist in the search and rescue operation, a Senior Station Officer of the Fire Services Department said.
She further explained that the electronic map can only see the basic topography of the mountain, but through the seasonal map, people can further see the streams and bushes, thus reducing the scope of the search and rescue, and ultimately succeeded in finding someone.
She also suggested that the public should avoid traveling alone on the mountain, plan the trip carefully before departure, pay attention to weather conditions, and keep in touch with friends and relatives to update their location regularly; if anybody is unfortunately lost, he or she should remain calm and turn back along the road as far as possible, or stay in the same place to wait for rescue.
