
The Observatory said it will issue the Number 8 gale or storm signal at 12:40 pm on Sunday (Oct. 8).
Typhoon Koinu is expected to come within 100 kilometers of Hong Kong.
The Observatory said gale force winds are expected to affect many parts of Hong Kong.
It said heavy squally showers are expected over the territory on Sunday and Monday and advised the public to monitor the weather bulletins from the Observatory.
It said at 7:45 am that in the past hour, it had recorded maximum sustained winds at Tate's Cairn, Waglan Island, and Cheung Chau of 78, 72, and 57 kilometers per hour, respectively.
