The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) said today (Oct. 5) that Tropical Cyclone Koinu crossed southern Taiwan and entered the Taiwan Strait in the past few hours, and its strength has weakened. The Observatory said it would consider issuing Strong Wind Signal Number Three tomorrow night and Saturday morning.
At 4 p.m. today, the HKO said Koinu had not yet reached typhoon status and had gathered about 590 kilometers east of Hong Kong. It was expected to move westward, with a speed of about 10 kilometers per hour, across the Taiwan Strait.
The Observatory expects it to move towards the eastern coast of Guangdong, but it will gradually weaken under the influence of the monsoon and may approach the Pearl River Estuary by the end of the week.
As to whether a higher warning signal will be issued, the Observatory said it would depend on the speed of its weakening and its distance from the Pearl River Estuary. In addition, Hong Kong will experience sudden flurries during the weekend and on Monday (Oct. 9) next week, sometimes with strong northerly winds, especially offshore and in the highlands, making the weather cooler.
