Storm Koinu intensified into a typhoon in the early hours of this morning (Oct. 2), crossing the waters east of the Philippines and continuing to strengthen.

The Hong Kong Observatory predicts that it will move towards the Luzon Strait and southern Taiwan in the next two to three days and gradually strengthen, and may then enter the northeastern part of the South China Sea, or within 400 kilometers of Hong Kong on Friday (Oct. 6).

The Mainland's Central Meteorological Observatory forecasts that Koinu, which could reach a strong typhoon or super typhoon, will make landfall along the southeastern coast of Taiwan in the morning of Thursday (Oct. 5), and then move in a westerly direction into the northeastern part of the South China Sea before gradually weakening. Due to the combined effects of the typhoon and cold air, strong gusts are expected in the Taiwan Strait and the northeastern part of the South China Sea.

Taiwan's meteorological administration expects Koinu to trend toward southern Taiwan, possibly crossing the Hengchun Peninsula or passing offshore in the south.
