The new Commissioner for Sports, Mr Sam Wong Tak-sum, takes up his post today (August 22). In an interview this morning, he said he would take up the new post with a sense of balance and hoped that his past experience in serving the sports sector in Hong Kong would help him face the challenges of the job.
With successful advancement from athlete and coach to administrative positions, Wong was once a Hong Kong windsurfing athlete, representing Hong Kong in the Olympic Games, Asian Games, and other tournaments, and has won numerous awards. He retired in 2000 as the coach of the Hong Kong team and won the "Best Coach of the Year" award for five consecutive years, then joined the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China in 2008. He was appointed as the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Amateur Hockey Club in 2017, and later as the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Table Tennis Association in 2022.
As for his priority work in the future, Wong said he will discuss it in detail later for today is his first day in office and he needs time to get used to the new post.
