The "633" fixed toll scheme is implemented in the three vehicular harbour crossings today (August 2). For private cars, the toll for using the Western Harbour Crossing (WHC) has been reduced from HK$75 to HK$60, while the toll for the Cross-Harbour Tunnel (CHT) (previously HK$20) and Eastern Harbour Crossing (EHC) (previously HK$25) has been increased to HK$30 each. Cross-harbour taxis will be charged a uniform fee of HK$25, and other types of vehicles' tolls remain unchanged.
The Secretary for Transport and Logistics Bureau (TLB), Lam Sai-hung, stated this morning that the initial operation phase of toll plans for the three crossings has been running smoothly. Specifically, WHC has seen a significant increase in traffic compared to the same period before. "During the period from midnight to 5 am, the number of taxis passing through WHC has increased by 50%," said Lam.
Lam emphasized that TLB is not just concerned about the tolls of individual tunnels but focuses on the overall traffic diversion. The implementation of the "633" fixed toll scheme has narrowed the toll difference among the three tunnels. The authority believes that this plan can reduce vehicle detours and alleviate pressure on the CHT and the EHC.
He also mentioned that tunnel revenue is not the government's primary consideration; the most important is addressing the traffic situation in the city.
In addition, he announced that the HKeToll system will be implemented in the WHC, starting from August 6 at 5 am and in the EHC starting from July 27 at 5 am, replacing manual and automatic toll booths.
