
International travelers to China can make digital payments at local retailers nationwide by connecting their overseas bank cards to WeChat Pay, or Weixin Pay in Chinese.
Tencent announced today (July 20) that in order to further improve the mobile payment experience of overseas users in China, the Chinese tech giant has deepened cooperation with international card organizations such as Visa, Discover Global Network (including Diners Club), JCB and Mastercard.
Recently, the WeChat payment network in various mainland Chinese cities has been fully and orderly developed, supporting businesses in many fields such as catering, transportation, shopping malls, and wine and tourism. It's still expanding consumption scenarios.
As early as 2019, WeChat Pay already supported using of international credit cards and supported users to consume at some pilot merchants.
After the latest expansion of the WeChat Pay merchant network, inbound travelers can open WeChat Pay accounts with their passports, Mainland Travel Permits for Hong Kong and Macao residents (Home Return Permit), Mainland Travel Permits for Taiwan residents (Taiwan Resident Permit), and foreigners' permanent residence ids, etc.
They can connect their international bank cards with WeChat Pay, so that they can conveniently consume at more than 10 million small and medium-sized merchants in mainland China.
It is worth mentioning that in order to support the small-amount and high-frequency consumption needs of users, WeChat Pay waives user transaction fees, for single transactions of 200 yuan or less. (For details please refer to the actual payment page)
