Connie Talk EP5 | Jason Wong optimistic about HK tourism as city embraces more visitors with diversified products

In an exclusive interview, Mr. Jason Wong, one of the leading figures in Hong Kong's tourism industry and the Executive Director of the Hong Thai Enterprise Company Limited, provided a detailed overview of the post-COVID recovery of the tourism sector in Hong Kong. Despite acknowledging the slow pace of the industry's recovery, Wong expressed optimism about the future, pointing to the recent easing of visa restrictions and the return of part of the industry's workforce.

However, the return to pre-COVID levels of tourism will take time, with current estimates placing the recovery at about 50% of the pre-pandemic levels. Wong attributes this slow pace largely to workforce shortages, as many industry professionals have shifted to other sectors during the pandemic.

Further challenges include the limited flight capacity due to recruitment difficulties, both in Hong Kong and globally, and the reliance on part-time staff in many sectors. Despite these obstacles, Wong remains hopeful, citing the reopening of borders and the gradual improvements being made as reasons for optimism.

As a tourism veteran, with over two decades of experience in the industry, Wong also outlined how Hong Kong is diversifying its appeal to tourists. Highlighting new cultural attractions, such as the West Kowloon Cultural District, the Palace Museum, and M+ Museum, Wong emphasized Hong Kong's position as an international city and cultural bridge between China and the rest of the world. He also revealed efforts to attract more international sports and cultural events to the city.

Jason Wong's family has a deep-rooted history in the tourism business, extending beyond Hong Kong to mainland China, Macao, and Southeast Asia. His insights into the industry's past, present, and future offer a compelling picture of an industry adapting and innovating in the face of significant challenges.
