Hong Kong Observatory said on Sunday (July 16) it would assess the need to issue the No. 8 typhoon signal from midnight to Monday morning as tropical storm Talim intensifies and moves closer to Hong Kong.
The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3, is in force.
This means winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometers per hour are expected.
At 1 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Talim was estimated to be about 390 kilometers south-southeast of Hong Kong (near 19.1 degrees north 115.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 15 kilometers per hour in the general direction of western Guangdong and Hainan Island and intensify gradually.
The public is urged to avoid the coast and water sports.
Due to the approaching storm, the Ngong Ping 360 cable car service will be closed today. Hong Kong Disneyland says it's operating at reduced capacity as outdoor rides are closed.
Earlier, the Hong Kong Tourism Board announced that music shows at the harbor and a fireworks version of the Symphony of Lights had been canceled. They were part of the Harbour Chill Carnival.
