Tongli Ancient Town, one of China's best-preserved water villages with a history of more than 1,000 years, is located in the southeast of Suzhou City, about 50 minutes by car from the center of Suzhou. The town is known as "the Venice of the East" and is well worth a visit, whether it's for the distinctive medieval architecture, the lively canal-side streets, the stunning water, or the welcoming residents.
You can find yourself surrounded by a tranquil, upscale ambiance as you stroll through the town. In Tongli Ancient Town, there are eight main streets, some of which are partially obscured by trees and others of which are tucked away by the river.
The town's 49 stone bridges, which connect seven islands made by 15 rivers and 5 lakes, have made it a place full of unique charms.
Tongli Ancient Town, Zhouzhuang, and Luzhi were all inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2004.
One of the most well-liked places in the town is Tuisi Garden, sometimes referred to as Retreat and Reflection Garden. The garden, which was constructed by Ren Lansheng between 1885 and 1887 during the Qing Dynasty, is divided into two sections: the western segment and the eastern section.
While the western portion contains a private residence, the eastern portion is a public space with ponds and pavilions beside the water. The garden in Tongli Ancient Town offers a stunning vista with blooming trees and lovely flowers, making it a must-see attraction.
The three well-known bridges, Taiping, Jili, and Changqing, are all notable monuments of the city and are revered by the inhabitants as sacred structures.
