Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Tse Chin-wan, said at a Legislative Council (LegCo) session today (July 14) that the garbage charge scheme will not be further postponed as the government is striving for the gazettal of the levy in October this year.

The Hong Kong government has pushed back the implementation of the garbage levy, which was originally scheduled for the end of this year, to April 1 next year.

Describing the delay as a difficult decision, Tse said the decision was made after the cleaning industry complained about the busy period at the end of the year.

According to the authorities, they are studying the setting up of vending machines at public transport interchanges, LCSD, markets, public housing estates and MTR stations to expand the sales network of designated garbage bags.
