The spokesperson of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council issued a statement on May 14, in which he expressed concern over the so-called "hearings" held by the U.S. Congress and the Administration's China Committee and its so-called "report", which arbitrarily smear the Hong Kong national security law and the judicial system of the HKSAR and call for sanctions.
"The Central Government firmly supports and fully protects the HKSAR judiciary and judicial personnel in performing their duties independently and impartially in accordance with the law," said the spokesperson.
The spokesman pointed out that judicial independence is an internationally recognized principle of the rule of law, and that the independence of judges from any interference in trials is an essential cornerstone of the rule of law. Since the reunification, the rule of law and judicial independence of the HKSAR has been widely praised by the international community.
Judges in the HKSAR exercise judicial power in accordance with the Basic Law of Hong Kong, the National Security Law of Hong Kong and other laws to try cases of crimes suspected of endangering national security, and it is only natural and unquestionable, the spokesperson added.
"Those U.S. politicians who claim the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary have intimidated the judges of the HKSAR, who are dedicated to their duties, by imposing sanctions on them, to the horror of the world," said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson also noted that the threat of pressure will not deter the people of Hong Kong and the judges of the HKSAR, but will only provoke the whole Hong Kong community to make a common cause.
"The facts will once again prove that the clamor of those American politicians is destined to be futile and can only bring disgrace to themselves," said the spokesperson.
