The "HKeToll" system (non-stop toll collection service) will be implemented at the Ching Sha Control Area (Eagle's Nest Tunnel, Sha Tin Heights Tunnel and Tai Wai Tunnel) from 5 am this Sunday (May 7).
The Commissioner for Transport, Rosanna Law, said in a radio program today (May 5) that 680,000 vehicle tags had been issued, equivalent to 85 percent of all vehicles in Hong Kong, and that the preparatory work for the "HKeToll" had been largely completed.
The vehicle owner who has received the vehicle tag should not only put the tag on the front glass, but also open the "HKeToll" account for automatic payment.
If the driver has not yet receied a vehicle tag, he or she does not need to stop immediately when passing through the Tsing Sha Control Area, because the Control Area can identify the owner with the vehicle license plate. The authorities, however, do not encourage the relevant practice, and call on vehicle owners to complete the opening of the "HKeToll" accounts as soon as possible.
Officials earlier said they aimed to extend the e-toll system to all government tunnels later this year.
