Sitar player Anil Singh to perform Indian classical music in June
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has invited sitar performer Anil Singh to perform a recital of Indian classical music in early June. The concert will lead the audience to a night of meditation on music and soul through the rendition of several pieces of North Indian music and kick off this year's World Music Series.
In the first half of the recital, Singh will play two pieces of "Rag Mishra Shivranjani" and "Rag Jog", based on the raga mode of traditional Indian music, according to the feeling, mood and atmosphere of the moment. Through the ethereal rhythm, the audience will go on a spiritual journey.
In the second half, Singh plays Dhun, a number of light classical Hindu songs. Dhun is mostly short and brisk Indian music with varied scales and rhythms. Finally, Singh will play an old river song from West Bengal, giving the audience a taste of Indian folk customs and characteristics.
Singh received strict musical training from a young age and has played and taught in India for more than 25 years. His focus on music and spirituality has earned him the respect of supporters and proteges alike. In 2001, Singh moved to Hong Kong. In addition to lecturing at various universities, he has also collaborated with musicians of different traditions and genres, introducing the beauty of sitar and Hindu classical music to local audiences. Singh was awarded a Banaras Shri Award by the Government of India in 2015 for his outstanding achievements.
