China has officially started the deployment of a project to promote the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in frontier sci-tech research, focusing on key problems in basic disciplines and research needs in key sci-tech fields such as drug development, gene research and biology breeding.
Jointly launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the project is called AI for Science.
This project, according to the ministry, will further strengthen system layout and overall guidance to promote the deep integration of AI and sci-tech research, so as to promote the opening and convergence of resources, and enhance innovation capabilities.
The ministry will advance the development of AI models and algorithms for challenging scientific challenges as part of the project, create a number of platforms for standard research areas, and quicken the creation of a national open innovation platform for the next wave of AI public computing capacity.
It also vowed to bring together interdisciplinary research and development teams, encourage the construction of an innovation consortium, and build worldwide academic exchange platforms to propose solutions to shared human scientific concerns, like cancer treatment and the climate crisis.
