John Lee, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, hosted a dinner at Government House to welcome the national men's basketball team (Team China) to HK for their home matches and wish the team to continue to make success in the 2023 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Basketball World Cup.

The Chinese men's basketball team defeated Kazakhstan and Iran in the 6th window of the 2023 Men's Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers at the Tsuen Wan Sports Centre in HK, and entered the Men's Basketball World Cup in August with a total record of 10 wins and 2 losses. Lee expressed his gratitude to the country for its trust and support in designating HK as the home venue for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Lee said the tournament has three main features and meanings for HK, including the ability to leverage the advantages of "one country, two systems" to contribute to the country's rapid development; to take advantage of the country's strong support to host a top international event; and to promote the flourishing of sports through the demonstration of superb skills by top athletes.

In 2025, HK will co-host the 15th National Games with Guangdong Province and Macau SAR. Lee added that the government will do its utmost to promote sports development in HK by further improving sports policies in five areas: universality, elite, events, professionalism, and industry, as well as increasing and upgrading sports and recreational facilities across the board, and encouraging the community to work together to build a culture of passion for sports.
