The European Union (EU) plans to formally adopt a tenth round of economic sanctions on the first anniversary of the Russian-Ukrainian military operation. Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, made the announcement at the European Parliament on Wednesday (Feb. 15).
Bloomberg reported that according to von der Leyen, the EU will include Iranian entities that supply drones to Russia for the first time in the new round of sanctions, and impose bans on goods worth 11 billion euros through trade bans and technology controls.
The EU also plans to impose broad trade restrictions on goods used by the Russian military, including technology, components, heavy vehicles, electronics and rare earths. The EU further proposes to ban goods crossing the border from Russia to reduce the risk of sanctions violations and to impose restrictions on Russian rubber and asphalt imports into the EU.
The EU is planning to force banks to provide information on the assets of Russia's central bank in order to sanction dozens of individuals and entities, including political figures and military personnel.
The EU's sanctions will need the support of all member states to pass, so this plan is still subject to change before it is approved.
