The 25th Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon was held yesterday, with 34,783 people at the start, an attendance rate of nearly 97.5%, the highest ever after the Hong Kong government lifted the ban on gathering, isolation orders and other anti-epidemic measures.
According to the Hong Kong Association of Athletics Affiliates (HKAAA) Executive Director Dennis Ng in a radio program today (Feb. 13), the average attendance rate of marathons held before the epidemic was about 85%, and this year's record was unexpected.
It is believed that the relaxation of epidemic prevention measures after COVID-19 has boosted the interest of runners in participating in the race.
The next race is expected to be held on Nov. 19 this year and it is believed that the quota will be increased.
In addition, he mentioned that the overall atmosphere of yesterday's race was lively. Due to the high humidity, the performance and physical condition of the runners were affected. However, most of the runners were able to finish the race successfully.
