Hong Kong karate player Lee Chun-ho announced his retirement today (Jan. 2) in a social media post, ending his 13-year career with the Hong Kong team.
He said that he struggled to decide after learning that the Hangzhou Asian Games was postponed last year.
The Hangzhou Asian Games, originally scheduled for September last year, was postponed due to the epidemic.
31-year-old Lee said on social media that he had the idea of retiring after learning the news, "because I know that the new generation deserves the opportunity more than I do."
Lee joined the Hong Kong team in 2009. "13 years ago I dreamed of becoming a world champion, but at that time I was too young and ignorant to think about how far I was from the top of the world. 13 years has been a great time, and I thank karate for showing me how big the world is, for changing my life, and for teaching me to never give up." he said.
After retiring from karate, Lee hopes to continue to encourage the younger generation through his own experience and contribute to the Hong Kong team. "I hope that one day I can return to the Hong Kong team in another capacity and continue to contribute to the Hong Kong team".
Summing up his 13-year career in the Hong Kong team, Lee said, "It's a fantasy to have a dream journey in life and to represent Hong Kong".
