According to a local media report, it has learned from the relevant departments of the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission that the Mainland will cancel mandatory quarantine for arrivals from Hong Kong early next month at the earliest.

With the move, the Mainland side will only require three-day home medical surveillance for inbound travelers from HK, and one of the proposed dates for boundary reopening is Jan 9 (Monday), according to the source.

However, the SAR government said in a response to media inquiries that the exact date is still not available.

At a media session today, HK Chief Executive John Lee said that the government had been very active in negotiating with the mainland side on boundary reopening. "The mainland authorities also attach much importance to this," he added.

"I take this close to my heart, and I'll do everything that can facilitate it. But we also must be aware that decisions made are similarly based on the actual situation, and also data, and risk assessment in cities on the Mainland," he said.
