The Sham Shui Po Leisure and Cultural Building at Sham Mong Road in Cheung Sha Wan will be opened in phases from next month.
Legislative Council member Vincent Cheng Wing-sun and his team inspected the building today (Sept. 14), and mentioned that this is the effort of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) Sham Shui Po team and local people who have been fighting for the residents' construction for more than 10 years.
Cheng said that Sham Shui Po has been lacking a large recreational and cultural center and a hall for more than 1,000 people as well as sports venues.
The new building, which can accommodate about 1,000 people, provides a library, a five-a-side soccer pitch and open space, as well as a sports hall with a multi-purpose main court that can be used as a basketball court, volleyball court, badminton court or handball court, a table tennis room, fitness room and children's playroom, and can also be used as a community activity venue.
Cheng believes that the building can be used to organize more large-scale community activities, competitions and performances in Sham Shui Po in the future.
Cheng also mentioned that the completion of the building has brought him a lot of feelings. Since he became a district councillor in 2008, he has worked hard with his colleagues and local residents to fight for the project, from finalizing the planning and construction to seeing the completion of the building. He suggested that the authorities should continue to improve efficiency, speed up the progress of other recreational, sports and cultural facilities projects, and set up a project steering group to oversee the relevant projects so that more facilities for the benefit of the public can be completed as soon as possible.
