EyE on U | HK poised to become int'l I&T hub, more efforts needed to retain talents: HKSTP chairman

Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, innovation and technology (I&T) have been the two key drivers of the global economy. With digitalization being the development trend, innovation and technology have become increasingly important for Hong Kong's sustainable development.

On June 30 this year, President Xi Jinping visited the Hong Kong Science Park, emphasizing that he hoped HK could give full play to its strengths, pool global innovation resources, strengthen the collaboration with mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area and strive to build an international innovation and technology hub.

In this episode of EyE on U, we invite Sunny Chai, Chairman of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), to share his insights about HK's I&T industry.

Chai said, "The Science Park will capitalize on HK's unique advantages and leverage on our R&D strength, innovation policy, and talent strategy to start a new chapter for the development of HK's I&T ecosystem."

This year marks the 25th anniversary of HK's return to the motherland and also the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSTP. Chai said that over the past four years, HKSTP has launched a series of initiatives to help I&T enterprises to better develop in the Greater Bay Area.

"Today, the Science Park has developed into the largest technology R&D and business incubation base in HK, gathering more than 1,100 enterprises and 17,000 practitioners in the field of I&T. "

Chai pointed out that HK has embarked on its own path of reindustrialization. "From reindustrialization to innofactoring and also fundraising, the three have formed an ecosystem."

What other types of programs does HKSTP offer to support startups? What services and support can HKSTP provide for technology transfer between universities and the industry? How should HK improve its infrastructure to enhance support for incubatees in the face of fierce competition in Asia? How should HK capitalize on its strengths, leverage global innovation resources, and strengthen cooperation with mainland cities in the GBA to build an international I&T hub?
