The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) announced the list of outstanding blood donors in 2021-22 on June 13 to commend 3,686 blood donors who have achieved 25-times donations and above (multiples of 25).
2022 is the 70th year of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation service in Hong Kong since 1952. As the only institution providing blood products to all hospitals, the BTS is committed to ensuring an adequate and safe blood supply in Hong Kong. Throughout the past decades, the BTS has strived to promote the awareness of blood donation among the local community. It will continue to optimize the services to maintain a safe and sustainable blood supply while fulfilling donor expectations.
The Chief Executive and Medical Director of the BTS, Dr. Lee Cheuk-kwong, said, "The BTS has been deeply impacted by the fifth wave of the epidemic. With the unfailing support from different sectors of the community, 121,222 donors came forward and donated 210,863 units of blood, which turned into 363 025 units of blood products for clinical blood transfusion treatment. They have brought hope to many patients and showed support for all frontline medical professionals."
In addition to individual donation awards, Elite Partnership Awards were presented to the following corporate, community, and academia partners in recognition of their enthusiastic support and remarkable achievements for blood donation.
Dr. Lee reiterated that a sustainable, stable, and safe blood supply is an integral part of the health system. He urged members of the public to support World Blood Donor Day on June 14. This year, the theme is "Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives." The message highlights the significant contributions of blood donors as members of the life-saving team in providing blood to patients in need of blood transfusion.
Highlighting this year's theme, the BTS has collaborated with the Red Cross' blood services of Singapore, Thailand, and Korea and developed a special souvenir for blood donors who successfully come forward to give blood on World Blood Donor Day on June 14. The limited-edition "World Blood Donor Day 2022" Memo Brick is available on June 14 only, while stocks last.
