HKU ranked 21st behind Peking and Tsinghua University in new world university rankings

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the world's leading research institute for higher education, has released its 2023 World University Rankings. Seven Hong Kong universities remain on the list, with the University of Hong Kong, the highest-ranking university in the city, moving up one place to 21st, but still losing out to two mainland universities.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was ranked number one for the eleventh consecutive year, with Cambridge University in second place and Stanford University in third. The National University of Singapore became the highest ranked university in Asia at No.11. Peking University jumped six places from last year to rank 12th, while Tsinghua University was ranked 14th.

A total of 1,418 institutions participated in this year's rankings, and the views of more than 150,000 academics and 99,000 employers were collected. The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Hong Kong Baptist University are all ranked higher, with The Chinese University of Hong Kong at No.38, Hong Kong Polytechnic University at No.65 and Hong Kong Baptist University at No.281.

The rankings of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and City University of Hong Kong  have dropped to 40th and 54th respectively, with Lingnan University ranked in the 601st to 650th range.
