The government announced on Wednesday (June 8) that it will recognize medical qualifications from 23 additional universities, allowing more non-locally trained doctors to practice in Hong Kong.
Among the latest batch is Fudan University in Shanghai, the first mainland institution on the list of the special registration scheme.
In accordance with the Medical Registration Ordinance, the Director of Health, as the Registrar of Medical Practitioners, announced today the second batch of medical qualifications recognized by the Special Registration Committee (SRC).
The second batch of recognized medical qualifications covers 23 qualifications from institutions in Australia, Canada, China, South Africa, the UK and the US.
Together with the first batch of medical qualifications recognized as announced in end-April, the SRC has so far recommended a total of 50 medical qualifications for recognition.
Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan said the announcement of the recognized medical qualifications in batches enables qualified non-locally trained doctors to come to serve in Hong Kong's public healthcare institutions through special registration as soon as possible, with a view to alleviating the current shortage of doctors in the public healthcare system.
She added that the list may also serve as a reference for students who intend to study medicine outside Hong Kong and facilitate their choices for further studies.
The list of the second batch of recognized medical qualifications will be gazetted on June 10 and will take effect the same day.
It will then be submitted to the Legislative Council for negative vetting on June 15.
