HK's 'elevator king' Hu Fa-kuang passes away at 98

Hu Fa-kuang, also known as Hong Kong's "elevator king", founder of Ryoden Development and Honorary Vice-President of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, passed away on Saturday (June 4) at the age of 98.

Hu is a leading figure in promoting Hong Kong's sports development. As the Honorary Vice-President of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, his efforts in supporting various sports associations have brought positive and profound impact on the sports sector even till today. Hu is also a successful entrepreneur and a member of the then Urban Council and Legislative Council. He was awarded Grand Bauhinia Medal in 2016.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam today (June 8) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Hu.

"Over the last century, he was committed to public and community service. Through his work as a member of the Legislative Council and the Urban Council and a Hong Kong Affairs Advisor, as well as in other public positions, he made exemplary efforts in fostering the continuous development of Hong Kong. With his passion in sports, he was particularly supportive of the activities of various sports associations and significantly contributed to the sports development of Hong Kong. I am saddened by the passing of Mr. Hu. On behalf of the HKSAR Government, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to his family," Lam said.

The Acting Secretary for Home Affairs, Jack Chan, today (June 8) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Hu and extended his deepest condolences to his family, "With great passion in sports, Hu has been proactively promoting the sports development in Hong Kong and made tremendous contributions over the past decades. His departure is a huge loss for the sports sector and he will be truly missed."
