A delivery platform Deliveroo's staff was suspected to have spilled drinks during delivery and poured the drinks back into the cups for delivery, according to a reader who witnessed the process on Wednesday (June 1).
The video provided by the reader showed a person squatting next to a motorcycle with his mask pulled down to his chin, with a Deliveroo delivery bag on the motorcycle, and a cup of dark drink with the lid open on the ground. The person was seen pouring the liquid from the plastic bag back into the cup and putting the meal back into the plastic bag.
The footage has been circulating on the Internet, with some people saying "That's why I always pick it up myself".
Dr. Kwan Ka-mei, a family doctor, said that the behaviour was "very dirty". She pointed out that there are many ways to contaminate drinks, including the surface of cups that have been touched by people, plastic bags filled with drinks and cups that have been left on the roadside. She suggested that people should pick up takeaways by themselves or warm them up before eating if they choose to get them by delivery people.
Another family doctor, Dr. Cheng Chi-man, said that it partly depends on the cleanliness of the plastic bag. If the plastic bag is not directly used for food, it may not be as demanding as a special plastic bag container and may contain higher levels of bacteria. In addition, plastic bags may contain additives such as colourings and chemicals such as organic oils, and are therefore not suitable for human consumption. According to him, people should pay attention to factors such as delivery and storage temperature when buying takeaways.
