Chicken-flavor instant noodles produced by Samyang, a South Korean food brand, recently triggered disputes on the Internet after the product was caught implementing different shelf-life standards for its foreign products.

On the Korean-version website of the brand, the product's shelf life is six months, while its shelf life becomes 12 months after switching the language into Chinese and English. Related product introductions to the food also differ from its Korean version.

According to industry insiders, most instant noodles are fried food. During circulation and storage, the fat in noodles will gradually oxidize, thus increasing the peroxide value index, especially in summer when the storage temperature is higher than other seasons. Therefore, instant noodle producers usually set the shelf life at about six months.

The shelf life of instant noodles produced by famous brands like Kangshifu, Nissin, Nongshim, and Baixiangis is six months.

Samyang has yet to explain the sell-by date discrepancy.
