Coronavirus variant Omicron is spreading in Hong Kong local community, Ivan Hung Fan-ngai, a top infectious disease expert at the University of Hong Kong, said today (Jan. 23) that the fifth-wave of the virus cycle is now approaching its final stage, and it is expected that the Coronavirus in the future may be like the flu in the winter epidemic.
Ivan Hung pointed out that the Omicron is generally more transmissible, but the rate of fatalities or serious illnesses is lower. He described the victory over the epidemic as having seen the light of day. However, He stressed that the public still needs to persevere for a more extended period and comply with preventive measures.
He said that in the future, when the Coronavirus becomes a flu-like virus, people will need to receive an additional dose of the Coronavirus vaccine in addition to the annual flu vaccine. The second generation of the vaccine is believed to be more effective against the Omicron variant of the virus when it becomes available.
