Salary earners in Hong Kong can expect a pay raise of 1.7 percent on average next year, slightly better than a 0.8 percent increase this year, according to a survey conducted among 438 HK companies in September.

The poll commissioned by online recruitment platform JobsDB found employees in six sectors, namely information technology, banking, transport and logistics, data analysis and research, hospitality and tourism, business marketing and development, will see higher raises in the range of 2.4-3.7 percent.

In contrast, pay increases will stay minimal between 0.3 percent and 1 percent in three sectors – media and advertising, beauty and health, design.

Some 32 percent of the employers plan to increase full-time posts in the first quarter of 2022, compared with 14 percent last year. On the other hand, 55 percent will maintain the existing staff size, 8 percent lower than last year.

The survey also found that 21 percent of the companies laid-off workers in the three months before the poll, comparable to 23 percent during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, 45 percent of the polled companies expected a more robust business market next year and half of them said the recovery will continue into the latter half of 2022. Only 14 percent held a more negative outlook.

As for employees, JobsDB analysts said there was an increase in the number of those looking for more attractive job opportunities this year, a shift from last year when job security was the top concern.
