US a bigger threat to global democracy than China, Russia: poll

The New York Times published a commentary on Tuesday (June 22), where the author comments on US President Joe Biden's foreign policy. The article mentions a poll conducted by the Alliance of Democracies Foundation in 53 countries and regions, which found that respondents believe the U.S. is the greatest threat to democracy in the world, as compared to China and Russia.

The author pointed out that "rules-based order" is among the Biden administration's favorite terms, which is often used to counter China's development and excuse the country's violation of international law.

"Too bad. Because the 'rules-based order' is a decoy. It's a way of sidestepping the question Democrats should be asking: Why isn't America defending international law?" the author wrote.

The Alliance of Democracies Foundation, an international nonprofit organization, released the Democracy Perception Index 2021 in May this year. The survey was conducted in 53 countries and regions around the world with more than 50,000 respondents. As for the impact of the U.S. on global democracy, 35% of respondents said it would have a negative impact.

"According to an Alliance of Democracies Foundation poll taken in 53 countries recently, people around the world still view the United States as a greater threat to democracy in their country than China or Russia. If Democrats regularly asked whether America's actions violate international law, they would find that sentiment easier to understand," the author wrote.
