Local political leaders have urged Paul Harris, the newly elected chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association, to resign for making "irresponsible and misleading" remarks about the National Security Law for Hong Kong. (hkcnews)

Dear Mr. Harris,

As Chairman of the Bar, you have become its liability. You should reconsider your position.

According to today's Sing Tao Daily, Mr. Lawrence Lok QC, SC who nominated you in the election, did not know until yesterday that you were a city councillor of Oxford, England, which I might add is a foreign country. Also you are a member of a foreign political party - the Liberal Democrats of the United Kingdom.

The Bar in recent years has willingly or otherwise become more political and politicized. Your political background, particularly your political office in a foreign country, is not at all helpful to the Bar and its members. Last week the Bar had to issue a statement to disown your views as "personal".

Your position has been compromised and has become untenable. The Hong Kong public can no longer distinguish your role as Bar Chairman and that of a foreign political figure. Your loyalty to Hong Kong will also be questioned.

Yours sincerely,

Leung Chun-ying
