Coronavirus | HK govt categorizes UK as high-risk area
The Hong Kong government announces today (Sept. 24) that the UK will be classified as a high-risk area. Starting from Oct.1, visitors to HK from the UK will be required to have a 72-hour negative test result for coronavirus.
The coronavirus situation in the UK is worsening again, with 4,926 new cases confirmed Tuesday, the most since early May, and 37 more deaths. The authorities raised the alert level to the second-highest level on Monday. According to data updated this morning by Johns Hopkins University, there have been 412,000 confirmed cases and 41,000 deaths in the UK.
The UK has the highest COVID-19 death toll in Europe. With new infections accelerating in recent weeks, scientists say that the number could hit 50,000 per day by mid-October if left unchecked.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told citizens on Tuesday to work from home if possible and ordered restaurants and bars to close early, in an effort to slow a fast-spreading second wave of COVID-19, saying restrictions would likely last six months.
