HK Central-Hung Hom ferry service re-started operation on Sunday (June 28). The first sailing departed from Hung Hom at 7:30 a.m.

Many residents waited at Hung Hom Pier to board the first resumed ferry. Some ferry fans waited since 5 a.m.

The ferry route travel between Hung Hom (South) Ferry Pier and Central Pier No.8 (Western Berth) and cost $9 per trip for adults.

The basic schedule is every 20 minutes during peak hours from Mondays to Saturdays and every 30 to 50 minutes during non-peak hours, Sundays, and public holidays.

This route began to operate in 1965, and after 46 years of service to the public, it was suspended in 2011.

After conducting an open tender invitation by HK government, Fortune Ferry Company was selected to operate the ferry service. The company was granted a ferry service license for five years to operate the route.

The operator has carried out enhancement works at Hung Hom (South) Ferry Pier and Central Pier No.8, including free Wi-Fi, passenger seats, electronic display panels, broadcasting system, turnstiles, fans, and luggage storage facilities to provide better services for passengers.

The operator also plans to introduce environmentally friendly ferries and install solar cells at the docks in the future. It is estimated that the daily passenger capacity of this route is about 1,600, with each ferry carrying 130 or 190 passengers, depending on the type of ferry.

To support the government in developing a smart city, operators will also distribute real-time arrival and departure information of ferry routes through mobile phone applications within six months of the ferry service’s commencement. They will share the data with the public through the data.gov.hk portal.
