The Tokara Islands near Kagoshima Prefecture experienced another earthquake early this morning (July 2), marking the latest in a series of tremors that have plagued the region.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck at 4:32 a.m. local time (3:32 a.m. Hong Kong time) with a depth of approximately 16 kilometers. The strongest tremor, measuring lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, was observed on Akuseki Island in Toshima Village.
Since June 21, the area has recorded over 850 earthquakes with an intensity of 1 or above. These include two quakes measuring lower 5 and 13 measuring 4. Local meteorological authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, warning that tremors of similar strength could persist in the coming days.
The frequent earthquakes have caused significant distress among local residents, with many unable to sleep due to repeated nighttime tremors. Toshima Village Chief indicated that if the situation worsens to the point where daily life becomes unsustainable, the entire village may need to evacuate. To address the psychological toll of the prolonged seismic activity, health professionals may be dispatched to provide support.
Four years ago, Akuseki Island experienced a 5+ magnitude earthquake, prompting the evacuation of 30 residents from 12 households to shelters in Kagoshima and Amami cities.
