Wen Wei Po hailed for social commitment upon its 75th anniversary
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of Wen Wei Po. A celebration and photo exhibition were held on Wednesday (Sept. 27) afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
John Lee Ka-chiu, Hong Kong's Chief Executive and Zheng Yanxiong, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, and Li Dahong, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of the TKWW Media Group, among others, were present at the event.
In his speech, Li Dahong extended a warm welcome to the leaders and guests at the scene, highlighting Wen Wei Po's long-standing commitment to social responsibilities.
According to Li, over the past seventy-five years, Hong Kong Wen Wei Po has always been a recorder of the great achievements of the motherland and a disseminator of major national policies, keenly promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the Mainland and the SAR as an irreplaceable bridge and advocating patriotism and love for HK in this pluralistic city.
He added that the newspaper has always shouldered its social responsibility, paying attention to the solution of social problems and improvement of the public's well-being, showing a humanistic newspaper's vision and mission.
Wen Wei Po has actively responded to the changes of the times, forming a full-media, multi-platform, diversified, three-dimensional pattern of communication, constantly enhancing its influence and credibility, Li said.
Also addressing the event, Lee Ka-chiu said that Wen Wei Po's reports are rich and extensive, closely follow public sentiments and opinions, with well-organized analyses and pertinent and unique commentaries, which are an important channel for him and his team to understand public opinions, and also a source of inspiration and insight to the government's policy formulation.
He added that the future of HK is full of hope and opportunities, making it an excellent subject for news media to cover.
"I believe that Wen Wei Po will continue to work with the SAR Government to enable the world to have a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of the development prospects of the country and Hong Kong," he said.
Lee looks forward to Wen Wei Po continuing to serve as a bridge between the government and the public, as well as between the Mainland and the SAR, reflecting public opinion, exerting influence, conveying positive energy, and joining hands to build a better HK.
As another keynote speaker, Zheng Yanxiong said in his speech that that Wen Wei Po has taken up the responsibility of a media organization and spoken out for justice, effectively rallying people's support for safeguarding national security, and maintaining prosperity and stability in Hong Kong, especially over the recent years when HK has gone through great challenges.
Zheng said that President Xi and the Central Government attach great importance to the cause of "one country, two systems" in Hong Kong, and have recognised the work done by TKWW Media Group.
He also expressed three expectations for the media sector in Hong Kong, namely, to uphold the patriotic front, to continue to forge consensus for development and to strive to reshape the HK spirit.
At the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, a special exhibition showcases 75 of the most representative moments in the history of Wen Wei Po.
Wen Wei Po was established in Hong Kong on 9 Sept. 1948, with a history of 75 years. In 2016, Wen Wei Po and Ta Kung Pao were integrated to form the Hong Kong Ta Kung Wen Hui Media Group, bringing the newspaper into a new stage of development.
