In recent years, frequent disasters caused by climate change led to the displacement of families, leaving few habitable homes and harsh living conditions. The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) remains dedicated to helping those affected. This year, through the annual "Red Cross City Challenge" event, the HKRC aims to raise public awareness of the disasters brought about by extreme climate change and enhance disaster response and preparedness knowledge. "The 2nd Red Cross City Challenge" will take place from 1 to 3 March, 2024. With the theme of "Rebuild Life, Rebuild Home", the event encourages public participation to help displaced people rebuild safe and warm homes, bringing hope to them through the humanitarian services provided by the HKRC.
The HKRC has officially announced its collaboration with global brand Snoopy™ for the first time to take part in the event. First appearing in the Peanuts comic strip, which was created by American cartoonist Charles Schulz in 1950, Charlie Brown provides a warm home for his beloved beagle, Snoopy and Snoopy extends a helping hand to Charlie Brown when he feels lost or encounters difficulties. This story resonates with the loving interaction and purpose of the "Red Cross City Challenge", aiming to encourage public awareness and assistance for families in difficult situations, sharing the love and interaction with more people in need.
The press conference for "The 2nd Red Cross City Challenge" was held yesterday (Jan. 13) at the HKRC Headquarters. Mr. Stephen C W Ma, MH, CStJ, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the "Red Cross City Challenge", shared, "This year's theme, 'Rebuild Life, Rebuild Home', invites the public to venture into the heart of the city, experience the impact of natural disasters, and at the same time, understand the work of the HKRC in assisting affected people in their recovery process."
The event is honored to have Citi as the Platinum Sponsor. Ms. Aveline San, CEO and Banking Head for Citi Hong Kong and Macau, said, "Citi has enjoyed a longstanding partnership with the Red Cross around the world, supporting its disaster relief and humanitarian work. We are delighted to be expanding our partnership with Red Cross Hong Kong and supporting the Red Cross City Challenge. This initiative is not only in line with our ongoing commitment to addressing the most pressing societal challenges and supporting the local community, but also an engaging way to raise public awareness of how climate change and extreme weather affect natural disasters."
Renowned artists, 193 Denis Kwok@ERROR and Ying Chi Yuet (MrLittleCat), are invited to be the event ambassadors, calling on the public to support the event and encouraging the community to assist those in need. Denis expressed his delight at being the Event Ambassador, stating, "This event is not only a sports activity or a game but also a great opportunity for everyone to understand the situations of vulnerable groups. I encourage everyone to participate together, embodying the spirit of humanity." MrLittleCat visited a family affected by heavy rainfall in the North District and reflected on the visit, saying, "In times of disaster, emergency assistance is vital. Every step and every contribution from participants can make a difference for the affected families." During the event, the Event Ambassadors also demonstrated CPR techniques with members of the Red Cross Youth Unit, highlighting the importance of first aid in emergencies.
