HK schools respond positively to National Security Education Day
Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government Kevin Yeung Yun-hung said on Saturday (April 10) that local schools have responded positively to holding flag-raising ceremonies and related activities on National Security Education Day.
Yeung said on a radio show that April 15 marks the first National Security Education Day since the implementation of the Law of the People's Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the HKSAR.
The Education Bureau of the HKSAR government has issued a circular to schools encouraging them to take this opportunity to hold activities such as flag-raising ceremonies and morning meetings to introduce national security concepts to students.
Yeung said that the bureau will integrate national security education with the various subjects organically, so that teachers will not only teach students about the national security law in Hong Kong but also national security concepts and identity.
The bureau announced earlier that Citizenship & Social Development will become one of four senior secondary core subjects in lieu of Liberal Studies that will be implemented at Secondary 4 in the 2021-22 school year.
Yeung said that the bureau earlier received more than 200 complaints about teachers' professional misconduct related to social incidents, of which about 40 were initially substantiated, one of which may result in the teacher's registration being canceled.
