Carrie Lam, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), said on Saturday that Hong Kong athletes have performed well in recent years and she expected them to achieve good results in the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games.

Lam delivered a speech at the award presentation ceremony of the 2019 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, saying although many international competitions were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it did not hinder the determination of Hong Kong athletes to strive for good results.

Ng On-yee (billiards) shared the Sports Stars Awards with seven other Hong Kong athletes. The awards also included the "Team Event" and "Team Only Sport" categories.

She said the HKSAR government will continue to support the development of sports in Hong Kong. Since last year, the HKSAR government has greatly increased its subsidies to the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong and other sports associations from about 300 million HK dollars (about 38.57 million U.S. dollars) to over 500 million HK dollars per year.

Organized by Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Sports Stars Award is an annual event that aims to encourage Hong Kong athletes and teams to strive for excellence. Due to the pandemic, the awards presentation ceremony originally scheduled for March 2020 was postponed. (1 U.S. dollar = 7.77 HK dollars)
