Opinion | Human rightists speak with forked tongue
By Gerry Brown, Financial Adviser
Accompanied by headlines in Western media, seven special rapporteurs of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) have sent a letter to the Chinese. They allege that Hong Kong's new National Security Law "infringes on certain fundamental rights" and urged China to comply with its human rights obligations.
The move is a blatant PR stunt -- and a big joke! First, Hong Kong matters are purely an internal affair of China. Moreover, the signatories are merely seven of some 80 special rapporteurs appointed by UNHRC. Any claim to be representative is clearly dubious. Also, they are not staff members of the United Nations, but external advisers.
The seven don't even represent the view or position of UNHRC. They are like the external committee of the UN's Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). This is the same office that alleged, with nary a shred of evidence, that Beijing had incarcerated millions of Uighurs in Xinjiang concentration camps.
Finally, where were the intrepid seven when real and heinous human-rights violations were committed? Examples include regular Israeli offenses against the Palestinians, the killings and brutal force perpetrated by US authorities against their own minorities as well as peaceful protesters, and the beheading of genuine dissidents by Saudi Arabia?
Moreover, the seven special rapporteurs are all whites. So they are representative neither of the global community nor world opinion on human rights. They are no different from the Western nations that continue to slander China for mistreating its Muslim population.
The UNHRC is in danger of becoming a shameless farce, hijacked by Western imperialists through the rapporteurs to demonize independent states that stand up to the American bully. The biggest joke of all was the West's support for headchopping Saudis to chair the Human Rights Council panel.
Like the Nobel peace and literature prizes, the UNHRC is being politicized and weaponized by white-supremacist states against sovereign nations that refuse to submit to US hegemony.
